How to convert ext3 to ext4

Now ext4 is default file system available for Linux kernel. Ext4 provides some additional benefits and perforce over ext3 file system. You can easily convert ext3 to ext4 file system. In this post you will learn how to convert ext3 to ext4 file system.

Run the following command to convert an existing ext3 filesystem to ext4 ( In given example I used /dev/sda3 which is ext3 formated )

[ root @ leolinux ~ ]#   umount   /dev/sda3

[ root @ leolinux ~ ]#   tune2fs    -O    extents,uninit_bg,dir_index   /dev/sda3

 

Next run fsck,

[ root @ leolinux ~ ]#   e2fsck  /dev/sda3
